The Challenge
Since its founding in 2004, momox has grown into an international enterprise, employing over 2,100 with employees from over 77 nations across three locations in Berlin, Leipzig, Germany, and Szczecin, Poland. Guided by the principle, “We give used items a new home,” the company is committed to sustainability and transparency, helping to extend the lifecycle of each item and protect the environment. To overcome language barriers and enhance communication within the company, momox decided to implement language learning with Babbel for Business in 2020.
The Berlin location, in particular, is home to many international colleagues, making language learning a central priority for strengthening communication and collaboration among staff. Many English-speaking employees want to learn German, while German-speaking colleagues are eager to improve their English skills.
“For us, language learning is crucial for internal communication.”

Fostering effective cross-location communication is also vital. In Berlin, most employees converse in English, while colleagues at the logistics sites in Leipzig and Szczecin primarily speak German and Polish. Given that employees often work together across these locations, it’s essential that they can communicate effectively in English. This is especially true for managers and department heads, who engage with various stakeholders and teams.
“Language learning is particularly important for facilitating communication among employees, particularly in meetings.”

Additionally, momox values both ecological and social sustainability. Language learning offers momox teams a valuable opportunity for professional development, fosters a sense of community, and promotes an inclusive work environment where all employees feel valued and supported.
Why Babbel?
As momox expanded, the demand for a comprehensive language learning solution grew. That’s when the decision was made to partner with Babbel for Business. A significant factor in this choice was the ability to tailor courses to each learner’s specific language level. With the placement test, employees can start at their current level, ensuring that no one feels overwhelmed or under-challenged.
momox opted for Babbel Live, a blended learning solution combining the Babbel app with virtual group and individual lessons. Credits are allocated based on employees’ needs and preferences, allowing for targeted learning. “It’s fantastic that employees can choose their teachers, explore different teaching styles, and book classes flexibly to suit their needs,” the Learning & Development team lead explains. “Some want to prepare for specific meetings or practice particular topics. The 1:1 classes are particularly valuable for this.”
Another advantage of the Babbel platform is its flexibility. Accessible on both desktop and mobile, it allows employees to learn anytime, anywhere, such as during their commute. The extensive range of topics ensures that everyone can find relevant courses that resonate with their interests and needs. This personalised approach boosts motivation and supports long-term learning success.
“For our team, Babbel is a tool that’s fun and genuinely helps them.”

The team lead uses Babbel herself and finds it supports her communication with colleagues and different teams. “Babbel helps me practice vocabulary and pronunciation and is a great tool for my daily communication.”
Employees have the option to use Babbel during work hours. The Learning & Development team recommends dedicating 15-30 minutes regularly to ensure steady progress. This integration of language learning into daily work life supports sustainable skill development.
“Many employees are actively learning with Babbel. This shows us that they are enjoying learning languages and want to continuously improve their skills.”

The flexibility and variety of languages available are particularly appreciated by employees. “They value being able to take charge of their own learning,” the team lead says. Some have used the platform since Babbel’s introduction four years ago, while others have refreshed their language skills and then paused or transferred their access. “Employees can decide if they have the time and need to learn with Babbel. If they can’t fit it into their schedule, the license can easily be transferred to someone else,” the team lead explains. “This creates a positive dynamic, and since 2020, we have consistently added more seats.”
Through the control panel, the Learning & Development team can not only flexibly distribute and transfer seats but also track learning activities and analyze usage. If the Learning & Development team notices a decline in learning activity, the individual is contacted to understand the reasons and to offer support.
“The overview in the control panel is very helpful for us. It allows us to track learning activity and see how actively Babbel is being used.”
